How to judge a golf glove

Five things decide whether a glove is worth your money.

Leather. AAA cabretta is the benchmark: thin, soft sheepskin that lets you feel the grip instead of the glove. It's what the tour brands use in their flagship gloves. Anything described as "synthetic leather" is a different product at a different price for a different golfer.

Fit. A glove should feel like a second skin the day you buy it, because cabretta stretches slightly as it moulds to your hand. Loose at the fingertips on day one means baggy by round five.

Construction. Look for stretch panels between the fingers. Leather grips; lycra flexes. Gloves that are all leather go stiff at the knuckles, and gloves that are mostly synthetic never quite feel the club.

Durability. A well-made cabretta glove lasts 10 to 12 rounds with basic care. Anyone promising 30 rounds from soft leather is describing a glove you'll stop enjoying at 15.

Design. The only one of the five where the industry gave up. If every glove in the shop is white with a logo, design stopped being a criterion. We think that's exactly why it should be one.

How many rounds should a golf glove last?

10 to 12 for quality cabretta, longer if you rotate gloves and store them flat in a pouch. If yours is dying at 6, it's either sized wrong (gripping too hard) or being worn for every practice swing and putt.

Are expensive golf gloves worth it?

Up to a point. Under £10 buys synthetic; £15 to £25 buys real cabretta and is where feel per pound peaks; £30+ mostly buys the tour logo. Spend in the middle, rotate two or three, and you'll play better leather all year for the same money.

Can you wash a golf glove?

Not in a machine, and not cabretta. Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, dry it flat away from heat, and store it in its pouch. Machine washing strips the natural oils that make the leather worth buying.
