How to Wash a Golf Towel: Microfiber Care Without the Mistakes
The fastest way to ruin a microfiber golf towel is to wash it the way you wash everything else.
The routine that keeps one working: machine wash at 30 to 40 degrees, no fabric softener, no bleach, air dry or tumble on low.
Softener is the mistake that catches most people. It coats the fibres that do the absorbing, and the towel comes out soft, fluffy and worse at its one job, a little more so with every wash.
The wash, step by step
- Shake it out first. Sand and dried turf grind through fibres in the drum. Thirty seconds outside saves the machine doing it.
- 30 to 40 degrees with normal detergent. Hot enough to kill what's living in a damp towel, cool enough to leave the fibres alone.
- No fabric softener, no dryer sheets, no bleach. Softener and dryer sheets coat microfiber; bleach eats it and the print.
- Wash it with synthetics, never with cotton. Microfiber grabs lint, and a drum full of cotton towels will fur it up in one cycle.
- Air dry, or tumble on low. High heat damages the split fibres that make microfiber absorb. Hung by the clip, it's dry by morning.
Why fabric softener is the enemy of absorbency
Microfiber works because each strand is split into finer strands, which multiplies the surface area that pulls in water. Softener fills those gaps with a waxy coating. The towel feels nicer on your face and does less on your wedges, and the coating builds up wash after wash. Habits between washes
Rinse the wet half at a tap or ball washer whenever it's more mud than towel, and hang it by the clip rather than folding it over a rail, so both faces air out. How often to wash, and when to replace
Every two or three rounds in summer; after every round once winter mud arrives. A microfiber towel cared for this way lasts years. Retire it when it stops absorbing after a proper wash, or when the smell survives the machine, because at that point the bacteria have moved in permanently.
Cotton towels survive any wash you throw at them, softener included. They also hold less water, weigh more wet, and slide over grooves, which is roughly why they're free.
